Google – “The Tech Tool” July 24, 2007

Well, to start off the first post, I figured I would start with the most widely used tech tool, Google.  We all use it to find out what the annoying "blue screen of death’s" code means.  Why we are getting that error in such and such program.  So Google is straight forward and easy to use for standard searching.  But did you know that there are way to hone your searches?  The first being "advanced " and "boolean" searching.  Using these methods which you can find below, will help to scale down your searches and to refine them to find that elusive tech info you are looking for and need.  There is also a really cool Google search feature call "Google Code Search".  As mentioned on CNET, "The service, conceived by the Google Labs early technology group, will crawl publicly available code, most of which is made available through open-source projects. The search and indexing covers code on Web pages and code that resides in compressed files, said Tom Stocky, a product manager at Google."  With the "file:" search function, you can search for that particular file that you may need to repair that software issue that is plaguing the user you are trying to support.
